Ocean Meets Land

About

We live on Topsail Island, North Carolina, a thin strip of sand between the Atlantic and the sound. Every day starts and ends at the place where the ocean meets the land.

That line is what we paint. Sometimes it's the beach outside our door. Sometimes it's a coast half a world away. The water and the shore are always in conversation, and so are we.

A level horizon divides a pale, cloud-streaked sky from blue-green water, with a band of light running across the water toward the viewer.

Sharon

Sharon paints the quiet: long horizons, open water, light moving across a surface. Her canvases are built up in thin, patient layers.

A blue crab drawn in bold black outline, its dark green shell and raised claws painted in teal, chartreuse and deep red against a warm peach ground.

Chad

Chad paints the creatures and the noise: bold lines, loud color, the things that scuttle and swim at the edge.

Seen from above, a diagonal line of white surf washes over a dense shore of dabbed pebbles in sand, rust and grey, with a slash of turquoise water in the top corner.

Together

Some paintings we make together on the same canvas, each of us working from our own side until the two meet somewhere in the middle.
